Freshmill Friday! Meet our permanent desk member, Ben Elsey. Ben is a chartered Quantity Surveyor, Project Manager and member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
Meet Ben
‘’I am the managing director and Founder of Macen Associates, a RICS Quantity Surveying firm. I provide professional services to private individuals and contractors on new builds, extensions and refurbishment projects across the UK and Europe. In January 2021, I also became the director and Co-founder of Lantern – a well-being property development and investment company. We design and develop homes that improve people’s health and well-being within the home and community. I have worked in other offices and coworking spaces, but I found they lacked character, space and light. I was looking for a space that could solve all those problems and offer a flexible, collaborative, and enjoyable place to come to work. I found Freshmill from searching online and booked a tour. I loved the space and after the tour I signed up for the dedicated desk!

Freshmill works perfectly for my lifestyle. I live in Lindfield so I can walk to the office and if I need to travel somewhere; it’s only a 10-minute walk to Haywards Heath train station. Having 24/7 access to my workspace really benefits my work and personal life. Freshmill is an excellent place to work; it’s spacious, provides fantastic opportunities to meet new people and clients, has a friendly environment, is professionally designed for holding client meetings and the coffee is great too! I actually enjoy coming to work at Freshmill!
Future Ambitions
We have huge ambitions to grow Lantern into the leading property developer in the country and Freshmill can help us by providing the space to grow our team. It’s a great place to invite investors, hold meetings and act as a central hub for our business in a key location.
There are huge concerns for the lack of housing, and we want to be a part of the solution. We have built relationships with a number of the top housing associations and councils in the country to build property for their housing needs. In addition to social housing – we will design and develop high end technological and sustainably driven properties that incorporate well thought out designs for benefitting health and well-being – which right now and for the future is critical.
I would absolutely recommend Freshmill! I really enjoy working here and I am looking forward to spending many future years at Freshmill. As we continue to grow we will be looking to expand to a big office to set up our hub! People can really benefit from the location of Freshmill with travel links to London and Gatwick just a few minutes walk away – the space is comfortable and perfect for start-ups or large businesses. I recommend anyone starting out (or hates working from home!) to visit Freshmill and try out a desk for a few days.”
